In building Sustainable Waterloo Region and Green Economy Canada , Mike has spent the past decade bringing people together from a wide mix of sectors to lead the shift to a green economy in Waterloo Region and beyond.

About Mike Morrice

While completing a double degree in business and computer electronics at Wilfrid Laurier, Mike fell in love with the spirit of Waterloo Region - calling it home since 2003.

Mike has spent his career bringing people together. This is one of the many reasons why so many people believe in his ability to deliver in Ottawa - even as political parties become increasingly partisan.

Mike has worked tirelessly, leading the shift to a green economy in Waterloo Region and across Canada. Mike founded  Sustainable Waterloo Region  in 2008, and shortly after, in 2013, he founded Green Economy Canada. Both organizations are dedicated to helping businesses and organizations reduce their carbon impact and increase profits.

Mike was named Young Alumni of the Year by Laurier (2011), Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the KW Chamber of Commerce (2012), won a Special Citation for Social Entrepreneurship by EY Canada (2018), and has been an Ashoka Fellow since 2012.

Why Mike Morrice is running for office:

  • Our community’s future depends on representatives who are willing to plan ahead and stand up for issues that matter to you - irrespective of party affiliations.

  • We need to be ambitious, pragmatic, and plan for the long term.

  • It is about listening to our community’s priorities and then taking action.

  • Our actions need to meet the times we are living in - for Mike, this means tackling the big issues.

Sustainable Waterloo Region: 2008 - 2013

In 2008, Mike founded Sustainable Waterloo Region  and piloted Canada’s first ever Green Economy Hub.

Within five years, Sustainable Waterloo Region had companies employing 14% of Waterloo region’s workforce committed to voluntary climate goals.

During this time, Mike also spearheaded the creation of ClimateActionWR, a collaborative effort,  securing unanimous support from Regional and City Councils for our community’s first-ever climate target.

This initiative lead to what is now Evolv1, Canada’s first net-positive energy multi-tenant building.

Green Economy Canada: 2013 - 2018

In response to global interest in replicating Green Economy Hubs, Mike founded the award winning organization Green Economy Canada in 2013.

Today there are 7 Green Economy Hubs across Ontario supporting over 250 organizations.

Green Economy Hubs work with organizations in many sectors, to lower their environmental impact and increase their profitability.
